WWE Survivor Series 2008 Results and Review

Here we go, the biggest night in November, and the Thanksgiving tradition is alive and well for all of you out there that remember when The WWF used to have these events the night before the big Thanksgiving day. It’s interesting to say the least, and what a night it used to be. Tonight, we saw a comeback, and more interesting storylines moving forward. This is how it all went down:

Shawn Michaels, Cryme Tyme, The Great Khali, and Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated JBL, MVP, The Miz & John Morrison, and Kane

The match started out in favor of the good guys, and right when MVP thought he had gotten a chance at a comeback, Khali jumped in and knocked him out, eliminating MVP! The momentum continued as Rey Mysterio and Khali teamed up to take out Kane, Kane was then eliminated from the match via a Rey Mysterio super splash! This match was going the way of the good guys, and why not? It seemed obvious o me that they were going to take over, but there were moments when Miz and Morrison took things over to their side, especially when eliminating Cryme Tyme leaving team HBK down and struggling towards the middle of the matchup. Things were not looking good for Hbk as his eye was busted open the hard way and the heels took advantage of this by hitting him with stiff shots whenever he seemed to bounce back. Mysterio was cleaning house, eliminating the Miz, only to lose sight and get nearly demolished by JBL on a blind tag in. So much so, that Mysterio was taking most of the attack by Morrison and JBL, the last two left in the match up after the Miz elimination left them short handed. Where was kane? I don’t know, he seemed to have been eliminated somewhere or something…I don’t know, my reception was screwed up and I missed a few key moments, cause I’m an idiot. JBL finally gets counted out, HBK then ducks a super kick from Morrison and delivers the real deal on Morrison and things went south for team JBL. The winners and sole survivors are Khali, HBK and Rey Mysterio Jr!

Beth Phoenix, Mickie James, Jillian, Candice Michelle, and Kelly Kelly defeated Michelle McCool, Maryse, Natalya, Victoria & Maria

You’re going to have to forgive me on this one, as I’m not the biggest fan of the divas, and I’m probably going to miss some of the action, as I was in the middle of something else during this match, but then again….maybe not. The two women’s champions started this match up and they were looking good. However, dissension in the ranks caused the heel team to crumble immediately. Maryse pushed McCool, and things broke out into a melee! Was this a shoot? Was this a work? I don’t know, it looked good for a minute. However, Maria got a blind tag, and this thing started to come apart fast. Beth Phoenix is just too good for a lot of these other divas, but I give the others credit, as they were sure giving it their best shot, even if the wrestling was just slow to begin with. Victoria is the first woman eliminated, and once again, I don’t know why she’s jobbing out! I wonder if she’s on her way out of wrestling? It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me to have her first eliminated. Whatever the case is, things were going south fast for the Raw side of the coin as there were two eliminations back to back. I was really impressed with how far Michelle McCool has come as far as wrestling is concerned. She threw in some great movies in there and I thought things were going well for her against Mickie James, however, a quick mistake from Maria (trying to save Michelle) cost her the elimination as Mickie James got the better of her, and things were going once again well for the Raw side. That prompted Maryse to jump in and eliminate Mickie James. Then things felt a little more even. Candice eliminated Natalya, and Maryse was stuck with Maria as the Raw side had a clear advantage of 3 on 2. Jillian dropped Maria with a samoan drop and I thought this match was over fast. Maria, pulled out a victory over Jillian for the elimination but then was quickly eliminated by Candice, and Maryse was left to fend off two of the Raw women. Maryse then eliminated Candice and we had Maryse against Beth Phoenix at the end of this match up. Beth was getting worked, and Maryse was showing that she’s not just a pretty face, and I was finally getting into this divas match up! Beth Phoenix wasn’t having it though, and after her finishing move, eliminated Maryse and won the match for the Raw side of things!

The Undertaker defeated Big Show in a Casket Match

I’m not sure why they insist on having Undertaker start all his matches in boxing stance, he’s not a brawler, he’s more than that, he’s the DEADMAN! Taker tries early on to get Big Show in the casket, but Show quickly moves out of the way and the two start brawling outside of the ring, which is exactly how these things should go. This should turn into a complete brawl, and not a technical wrestling showcase. Taker manages to drop a leg onto Show through the announce table, and this match is coming apart at the seems. Undertaker matches have become a bit formulaic, and just like all the great wrestlers of the past, these things go in cycles, and while Big Show let Taker take an early lead, a quick suplex off the middle rope got things back in favor of Big Show, and the Undertaker looked like a mere mortal yet again. But of course, he sat up! He dropped Show off the middle rope with a powerful choke slam and I thought it was over! However, Show took control again and dropped Taker with a chokeslam and then went to town on the casket and basically broke it, so that you couldn’t get locked inside! Then Show, like a jerk, started to walk out on the match, quitting! A chorus of boo’s were heard but Taker once again rose from the dead and the chase was on! This was great timing, as Kane’s pyro hit and stopped Show from leaving and the match got interesting yet again as they were brawling their way up the entrance ramp. The Druids came out and dropped off another casket at the top of the ramp and Undertaker brawled Show straight to the top! But of course, this wasn’t the end, it’s ppv after all, Show picked up the new casket then launched Taker through it, not breaking the casket, but it looked great and made a very loud noise. Show then propt the casket up, opened the door and Taker seized controlled and with an Irish whip, threw Big Show into the casket, the door closed behind him and BOOOM! The Undertaker defeats the Big Show in a casket match. Not the greatest bouts ever, but hey, Taker lives to fight again.

The Boogeyman showed up in the backstage area as the old turkey looking dude…you know what I mean…Boogeyman! He’s coming to get us!

Randy Orton, Mark Henry, Shelton Benjamin, Cody Rhodes, and William Regal defeated Batista, R Truth, CM Punk, Kofi Kingston, and Matt Hardy

I wasn’t looking forward to this match at all, but it had to be done, didn’t it? Regal was immediately eliminated by Cm Punk with the GTS and things were going by faster than I thought. R Truth once again gets pinned by Shelton Benjamin, and I’m wondering what they are going to do with R Truth now that he’s lost two in a row to the gold standard. Kofi Kingston jumped in and started a great comeback for the good guys, and this was an exciting part of the match up, Kofi and Shelton really work well together. Randy Orton eliminated Kofi Kingston and brought in Cm Punk to unleash a flurry of offense and try to get the former champion out. At this point it was 4 on 3 and things weren’t going well for the good guys, as the momentum was going back to the heels in this match up. Cody Rhodes eliminated Cm Punk, thanks to a quick interference from Manu! Matt Hardy joined the match but was eliminated by Mark Henry with the world’s strongest slam, but then was immediately blindsided by Batista with a spear and Henry was eliminated. Then Shelton Benjamin went in and basically got decimated by Batista and he too was eliminated. The last two guys, Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton were left to try and fend off Batista. But this was short lived, Cody Rhodes got worked to hell in this match up. Batista looked like an all-star against Cody Rhodes, and after a huge Batista bomb, I thought this match was over, but Orton had a blind tag and BOOOM RKO! The match was over! That’s right an RKO went down and Batista loses to Randy Orton via a HUGE RKO! Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton are now a makeshift team and are the sole survivors! Not a bad match up, and I didn’t expect Orton to win this one at all.

Edge defeated Kozlov and Triple H to win the world title

This was suppose to be a triple threat match up but unfortunately, due to what maybe a work, Jeff Hardy was found passed out at his hotel. Reports are saying that it is a work, but who knows these days…so that left this final match up to be a single championship match up. Kozlov looked great early on, putting the game through some rest holds and making sure this thing wasn’t going to be a high spot fest. Triple H turned things around and made sure to remind Kozlov that he’s got to hold down the roster. Triple H was definitely moving towards the pedigree but Kozlov caught it and hit his running head butt for a breather. The match was a little slow for my taste, but Kozlov was trying to wear down the champ and was interesting to see. Mid way through the match up, while both opponents were down and since Jeff hardy was out, Vickie Guerrero announced EDGE COMES OUT! EDGE EDGE EDGE EDGE!!! SPEAR BY EDGE! Jeff Hardy runs in with a chair and BOOOM knocks out Triple H and Kozlov! Then gets speared by EDGE! Edge goes for the pin on Triple H and wins the world title! That’s right, EDGE WINS THE WORLD TITLE! EDGE WINS THE WORLD TITLE AT SURVIVOR SERIES!!! EDGE WINS! EDGE WINS! Jeff Hardy was there too, but man he looked bad, he had a neck brace and everything.

John Cena defeated Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship

This was the moment of truth, John Cena was making his home town return and he was the odds on favorite to win this one. I’m hoping for a heel turn for Cena, and I’m sure a million or so people are also thinking that same thing. Despite Cena not being on television in a long time, the crowd was definitely all over him, cheering like crazy. Y2J had his fans, but nothing like Cena’s emphatic crowd reaction. That was interesting to say the least. Cena tried to be the aggressor early on, but Chris Jericho turned things around in his favor and really made for a slow start, which wasn’t what I was expecting. However, Cena is coming off an injury so maybe he was just getting favored instead of exposing any signs of ring rust. He also seemed somewhat rattled early on when he fell on his neck, and I’m not sure if that was Cena favoring a legit injury or playing possum early on to sway Chris Jericho, whatever the case was, Cena didn’t look like his old self in this match, at least not early on. Things picked up when he recovered and we got a nearly invincible John Cena, trying to dismantle Chris Jericho with a flurry of power moves. However, this first flurry was short lived as Jericho really slowed down the pace, and really looked strong against a much bigger John Cena. Cena didn’t allow himself to get beat too long as he came back with some great counters, but it just didn’t seem to be as effective as he wanted against Jericho, who’s been on a role to say the least. Cena finally looked weak as he was taken to the outside and Jericho really did whatever he could to cheat to win without getting disqualified. He kicked Cena in the head and into the post, threw him into the steel steps, drove him into the guard rails until he brought him back into the ring for something huge! A rest hold! Yeah, you can’t always get a spot fest, can you? Jericho was looking like a great champ in this one, isolating Cena and slowing him down completely, and while most would agree that this was a slow match up, it was nice to see someone take it to Cena for a change and not have Cena simply bounce back at each turn and play up to the crowd. They really let this one have time, and Cena was one step behind Jericho, which was interesting to say the least. If you wanted a classic wrestling match, you should be happy, because Jericho was definitely bringing it old school. I thought this one was done when Jericho put Cena in a picture perfect Liontamer, I’m telling ya, this wasn’t the Boston Crab, this was the Liontamer, all pressure on Cena’s previously injured neck and while Cena did manage to get out of this one, Jericho was still in full control, if only for a moment. Y2J turned it around with a Boston Crab variation of the Lion Tamer and right in the middle of the ring! This too didn’t get Cena out and the two were nearly counted out as Cena was prepping a comeback, but it just didn’t seem to be the average John Cena match up, and he wasn’t taking full control of this match, even though things were going a little long. The two battled it out near the top rope and I spotted a huge FU coming, but instead John Cena set up for a huge Leg drop off the top rope! The Code breaker hits on John Cena and he’s out cold! Seriously out, and this doesn’t put Cena away! Cena kicks out at around 2 and ¾ and Jericho stalked him, ready to pounce yet again, and I didn’t know what to expect. Cena slapped on the STFU and was slowly pushing to win this one but Jericho was slithering towards the ropes and got out, but Cena managed to set up for a FU and although the champ tried to get out, he just couldn’t do it and this one was over in expected fashion. John Cena beats Chris Jericho to become the new World Heavyweight Champion!

  1. Does anyone notice that Edge looks kind of like a cheap Triple H?
